When you walk down the streets of Leonardtown, La Plata, or Prince Frederick, you aren’t just looking at storefronts—you’re looking at the lifeblood of our community.

In Southern Maryland, small businesses are more than just line items on a tax return. They are the family-owned excavation companies that clear our land, the local HVAC teams that keep us warm in February, and the independent shops that sponsor our kids’ Little League teams. They provide the jobs that keep our neighbors from having to commute two hours into D.C., and they are the innovators keeping Maryland’s economy afloat during uncertain times.

However, for too long, our leaders in Washington have treated small businesses like an ATM rather than a partner. I’m running for Congress because it’s time to stop penalizing success and start empowering it.

The Burden of "Business as Usual"

Recent data shows that Maryland is currently facing some of the steepest declines in small business survival rates in the region. Between rising labor costs and a "regulatory maze" that requires business owners to be part-time lawyers just to stay compliant, our entrepreneurs are being squeezed.

When the government floats ideas like new tech services taxes or piles on additional reporting mandates, it’s the "little guy" who feels it most. A big corporation has a legal department to handle the red tape; a local plumber in Calvert County just has his kitchen table and a long night of paperwork.

Bridging the Gap: From Prince George’s to the Potomac

Maryland’s 5th District is one of the most diverse in the country, stretching from the bustling suburbs bordering D.C. to the rural heart of Southern Maryland. Yet, despite our different landscapes, we share the same frustration: Washington is obsessed with partisan "wins," while our local communities deal with the consequences of their gridlock.

Whether you are a federal employee in Upper Marlboro worried about the next shutdown or a contractor in Odenton navigating a maze of new regulations, the struggle is the same. You need a representative who prioritizes your paycheck over their party’s talking points.

The Cost of Partisanship

HOLLYWOOD, Md. — Naval veteran and local business owner Brian Jordan is officially launching his independent campaign for Maryland’s 5th Congressional District with a community kickoff party on Thursday, October 9, at the Port of Leonardtown Winery.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 6:30 p.m. and feature food, live music, and entertainment. It offers residents an opportunity to meet Jordan, a father of four from Southern Maryland, and learn about his platform in a relaxed, community-focused setting.

"I’m not tied to party agendas — I’m focused on listening to our communities and delivering real solutions,” Jordan said in a statement. His campaign aims to inject a fresh perspective into a district represented by incumbent Democrat Steny Hoyer since 1981.

The kickoff serves as the formal start of Jordan's push to get on the 2026 ballot, a process that requires independents in Maryland to gather 2,000 signatures from registered voters. His platform centers on addressing local challenges he believes are overlooked by partisan politics.

“I believe the current system is not working for everyone,” Jordan stated. “From schools that are not fully funded to roads in need of repair, from small businesses that are struggling to neighbors who feel unheard, I want to bring solutions that reflect the needs of the people.”

The choice of the Port of Leonardtown Winery, a symbol of the region’s growing agritourism, underscores his commitment to supporting Southern Maryland's diverse economy. Jordan positions himself as an advocate for small businesses, aiming to reduce regulatory hurdles and improve access to capital.

The 5th Congressional District encompasses all of Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties, along with parts of Anne Arundel and Prince George’s counties. We are inherently social creatures, wired for connection and belonging. From our earliest days, we seek groups, communities, and associations that give us a sense of identity and shared purpose. This fundamental human need for affiliation, often called "social identity theory" in psychology, explains why we gravitate towards political parties. We want to be part of something bigger, something we can be proud of.

But what happens when that pride is misplaced? What happens when the very leaders we've entrusted to represent us begin to prioritize the party name, their own power, or a narrow agenda over the interests of the people they swore to serve?

This is a critical juncture. It's a moment when our innate desire for belonging can be exploited , leading us to overlook actions that are not in our best interest. Psychologically, this phenomenon is often linked to "groupthink," where the desire for harmony and conformity within a group overrides individual critical thinking. We might ignore warning signs, rationalize ethically questionable behavior, or suppress our own dissenting opinions because breaking away feels uncomfortable or even disloyal.

Yet, ignoring these issues comes at a profound cost: your integrity, your voice, and your independent thought.

The good news is, a significant shift is already underway across America. Recent Gallup polls show that political independents now constitute the largest political bloc in the U.S., with an average of 43% of adults identifying this way in 2023. This ties a record high from 2014, and notably, independent identification has been 40% or higher every year since 2011 (with only slight dips in presidential election years due to increased partisan focus). In fact, the increase in independents has come more at the expense of Democrats than Republicans, a testament to a growing disillusionment with traditional party structures.

This isn't about abandoning the idea of community; it's about finding a community that truly serves you . When leaders consistently demonstrate a disregard for moral or ethical conduct, or when their actions clearly show they are not working in the best interest of the constituents they represent, it is time for new leadership. This feeling of discomfort in challenging the status quo is a natural psychological hurdle – our brains prefer the familiar, even if the familiar is detrimental. But overcoming this inertia is a crucial step towards genuine self-empowerment.

Many are worried about the security of their jobs, the quality of our schools, and the long-term health of our cherished Chesapeake Bay. These aren't abstract issues; they are the daily realities that keep us up at night.

But here's a truth I want to share: there are abundant resources available for those who want to pursue a college education through grants and other funding that do not come directly from taxpayers in the form of loans. The challenge isn't a lack of opportunity; it's often a lack of awareness and guidance in navigating the complex landscape of financial aid.

As your next representative for Maryland's 5th District, I want to make it a core promise of my campaign to bridge this information gap. My commitment is to empower every resident with the knowledge and tools to find these "free money" opportunities for higher education.
