Helping Maryland Residents Resident to Achieve Their College Dreams

Hello, friends and neighbors,

One of the most frequent conversations I have across our diverse 5th Congressional District, from the vibrant streets of Prince George's County to the close-knit communities of Southern Maryland, revolves around the cost of higher education. Far too many talented individuals, both young adults and those looking to reskill, believe that college is simply out of reach due to tuition fees and the fear of crushing student loan debt.

But here's a truth I want to share: there are abundant resources available for those who want to pursue a college education through grants and other funding that do not come directly from taxpayers in the form of loans. The challenge isn't a lack of opportunity; it's often a lack of awareness and guidance in navigating the complex landscape of financial aid.

As your next representative for Maryland's 5th District, I want to make it a core promise of my campaign to bridge this information gap. My commitment is to empower every resident with the knowledge and tools to find these "free money" opportunities for higher education.

You might be thinking, "Grants? What grants?" Many people are familiar with student loans, which have to be paid back, often with interest. But grants, like the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), and TEACH Grants, are forms of financial aid that generally do not need to be repaid. These funds come from a variety of sources – federal programs, state initiatives, private foundations, and even the colleges themselves – and are often based on financial need, academic merit, or specific areas of study.

Here's why this is so important for our district:

• Boosting Our Workforce: Investing in education means investing in a skilled workforce. By helping more people access higher education without the burden of debt, we can fill crucial roles in our local industries, support our federal agencies, and foster innovation right here in the 5th District.

• Empowering Individuals: A college degree or specialized training can unlock incredible economic opportunities and upward mobility for individuals and families. It's about giving everyone a fair shot at a fulfilling career and a stable future.

• Strengthening Our Communities: A more educated populace leads to stronger, more engaged communities, with higher civic participation and a greater capacity for solving local challenges.

My Plan to Help You Find These Resources:

If elected, I will establish an initiative focused on demystifying college funding. This will include:

1. District-Wide Workshops: Hosting regular, accessible workshops across the 5th District, both in-person and online, to guide students and families through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) process, which is the gateway to most federal grants.
   
   
2. Resource Hub Development: Creating an easy-to-navigate online portal on my congressional website that compiles information on federal, state, and private grants, scholarships, and work-study programs. This will be a one-stop shop for comprehensive funding information.
   
   
3. Partnerships with Local Schools and Organizations: Collaborating with high school guidance counselors, community colleges, universities, and non-profits to ensure they have the latest information and resources to share with their students.
   
   
4. Promoting "Beyond the Loan": Actively advocating for and highlighting non-repayable aid options, shifting the narrative around college affordability to focus on grants and scholarships first.
   
   

We have incredible talent and ambition here in Maryland's 5th District. My goal is to ensure that financial barriers do not stand in the way of anyone's educational aspirations. By connecting our residents with the grants and funding opportunities that already exist, we can empower them to pursue their college dreams, enrich their lives, and ultimately, build a stronger, more prosperous future for all of us.
